Problems on version 1.1.1 PRO

I only wish that there can someday be a button in the plugin options which when clicked would automatically fill all the empty menu items' Canonical URL fields with their default SEF value, instead of having to visit and click the "Auto" button in each and every menu item.

this is already what it does, check again what I wrote :

you must have the canonical tag that points to
DOMAIN/categories/2-uncategorised/20-test-article

using the automatic option it will route the url and render the menu item url if you come to the non sef url of the article

How did I mess this up? Indeed the canonical tags always display a page's SEF URL (this does not happen with Joomla's "system - SEF" plugin. That is why I consider Joomla's default canonical tags pseudo-canonical tags, besides being very dead rigid.

yes this is also what I wrote in a prevous message
the role of Custom Canonical CK is to add the tag to the relevant page, which is the routed url from the menu item, or at least the routed url from the article
