you don't need to post twice
Do you have a live example of the behavior that you are enjoying with the default menu ?
How does it work then ?
By my side I have a one finger which touch the screen, according to this action the menu opens or closes
I don't have any :hover state with my finger on a touch device
So could you explain a bit more about your solution ?

When I use the default Joomla menu module I use : focus in addition to :hover and that works on tablets. So with the default menu module it is possible to make the parent item active. So there must be another reason why Maximenu doesn't work this way. It's not a tablet issue but a Maximenu issue.

There isn't much to explain, I use the default Joomla menu-module on
amsterdamsespinozakring.nl/
(the same project I'm creating a new website for). When I click a parent item (f.i. spinozadag) and the page opens. When my finger is on the link without clicking it the sub-items open because of the a:focus.

I'm checking your website, but how do you do with a touch device to "When my finger is on the link without clicking it"
by my side, I have to touch the screen with my finger to get an action. It does not detect that my finger is over the screen
every time I touch the "spinozadag" item, it loads the page and the submenu is only shown a short time before the page has been reloaded
by my side this can not be used to go in the submenu

There is a difference between touch and click. For touch you use :hover on desk- and laptop and :focus on handhelds. If you only touch the parent it will not open the page but the submenu. It only opens when you click. Does this works different on your tablet? Which tablet are you using? I only have an iPad, no Android tablet.

Touch and press. If you place you finger it's touch, when you press it's click.
