Ok it has actually started working without the menu active, however the menu is a vital part of my website (obviously) can both not be active together?

Another thing I have noticed is that it only displays one image when I have added 4 for testing purposes.

ok now in the slideshow module options >> advanced options >> load jquery EASING >> set it to YES

this should make the slideshow work
then you must see if there is an option in your menu to not load jquery itself
