to be clear, you don't want to be able to click on an icon to expand the submenu ? do you only want the submenu to be shown when you are in the category

PS : in your old website you had the same behavior, just that you replaced the images with a 2x2 png image

The icon isn't necessary so long as clicking on a parent category causes it to expand and show the associated subcategories (and optional products in the parent) in the content area.

I can work with, or without the icons, but prefer that they're not displayed to maintain a cleaner appearance. The greater concern is that the tree collapses when clicking on anything but the root.

An update - I recreated the menu and now it works.

It still shows the "+/-" icons though configured "Use Images +/-" = No.
Is there any way to have the icons not displayed?

do you have the option "target element" on "image only" and "use images" on "no" ?
this can not be ;)
if you want to have the target on images only, then the images are forced to show, else you can not toggle (which is the wanted behavior of an accordion)

Thank you, I understand that is the intended behavior of the Accordeon, though not everyone cares about the ability to toggle. Clicking on the menu item (rather than "+") similarly opens the menu displaying the submenu items.

The only remaining issue we're trying to work through is that the menu now collapses again on its own when clicking on a submenu item. I've compared the module configuration to an old installation that works and can't figure out how to keep the menu expanded when traversing submenus.
