But for which file should I create an override ? is it /tmpl/default.php ?

ahh i can see that I have to override the /tmpl/_image.php file - but how do I do that. Putting in the /html/mod_maximenuck/ in my template does not work ??

you have to override the layout, I mean for example "default.php" where the main code is rendered. Then you can simply remove all what is not needed and keep the call to the link + description and image into your own html code
