Text seperator visible in breadcrumb. Howto avoid?

Hi,

I have a question about the text sepeator as a menu item in the maximenu. This one is common used to build an extended menu.

However when you use breadcrumbs you also see the text seperator menu items. These are not clickable which is strange for the visitor.

I use two text seperators before I start with a clickable link that is a submenu item of the text seperator. This is very strange in a breadcrumb.

Does anyone know if this can be avoided?

if you want links in your breadcrumbs, you must use links in your menu

Okay I see that I can use a real menu item. But is there a way to hide the text seperators in the breadcrumbs?
some display none somewhere in the code?

I have another question.

Can I add a class to the text-seperator menu item ?
Then I would like to add that class behind the breadcrumb class to hide it.

I tried it but did not succeed so far. However I think it will solve the issue. I tried it by giging these two elements a css class

but that did not work
