Position of first level menu items

Position of first level menu items was created by fsjoom12
I am working with the default theme CSS.
It seems that all of the first-level menu items default to a style that places the link text in the upper 1/3 of the <li> element. I don't see any way to override this, having experimented with padding settings with the Params plug-in - I want to center the link text vertically. I can change the padding, but I can't seem to change the distance between the link and the TOP of the <li> box. How are these items positioned? Here is an example:

you must play with the height and line-height on the element "span.titreck" in the css
