transition effect for menu images rollover (_hover

hi, is it possible to have a transition effect for menu images on rollover?

maybe you can point me in the right direction,
i tried this css, but no effect:

.maximenuck img {
-webkit-transition: opacity 0.4s linear;
-moz-transition: opacity 0.4s linear;
-o-transition: opacity 0.4s linear;
transition: opacity 0.4s linear;
}

or does it have to be javascribt (beyond my skills)?
