Thank you for the fast answer, but somehow it doesn't work for me.

We have several pcs here in the office and every pc with Windows XP and IE 8 doesn't show the submenu when hovering over the menu items.

All other pcs with win 7 and 8 show the submenus correctly. They also show the submenus correctly when switching the browser mode to IE7 or IE8 in the developer tools of IE.

Any ideas what might be the problem?

ok, that is what I did. You cna try to play with z-index + position:relative on these two div :
#menu
and
#mainhome
