Is it possible to make the submenu's go up instead of down?

In the backend I see a beta option that seems to hint at it and I've got a client who wants this.

yes the beta option can inverse the direction, just switch it

Great, I was hoping it was what I needed but nothing changes when I switch it on.
Anything that effects it? Any related settings I need to have up?
