Menu in Virtumart

I had created a new menu using this wonderful tool (thankyou) however I decided to delete all the categories from the product categories list in virtumart. I then made a new menu, But I think I must have missed something because all the lovely formatting for the sliding drop down menus has gone and the old categories have reappeared in an ugly bullet list

Attached is a screengrab of the result. There are two menus here, the top one is fine <Home About us About our crackers Contact us Your basket>

it is the second that is causing me grief, the top two rows <Christmas crackers Crackers for lovers Crackers for the family Crackers for children Gift wrap Valentines Silver jewellery Wedding treats Hospitality crackers> are the deleted (but reappeared categories) the last few are new, but will not follow the style I expected???

SO I tried to unpublish some categories in VM but it has no effect in the menu !! strange behavior
could you check this ? may be a VM issue or configuration problem ?
