Changing style of a vertical menu is not possible

I tried to change the color of a vertical menu (style option blank and default!)
This doesn't work and I don't know why.

thanks for the hint.
Now the vertical menu is working fine.

I shall remind you to my problem with the "main horizontal menu" in my post "gap for sub-sub menu / mouse over design" from april 05.

I stlill have the problem, that menu item type "System links - Separator" are not highlighted and there is only the cursor-icon like in an editor and not the hand-icon of the mouse while mouse over this menu item. Live view: test.mcv-moemlingen.net

Another problem is, that if you click on the menu item "Aktuelle Saison" in the main menu, the side menu is shown.
But if you mosue over the menu item "Fotoalben" in the main menu, the submenue is behind the sidemenu:
