For those who have purchased the excellent and inexpensive Maximenu CK Params plugin for Maximenu, it's real easy to make each item a different color.

Just go into the standard Joomla Menu manager and go to your menu item name. Click on the Advanced Options and you will see the Maximenu CK paramaters. Go in and change the normal, active and hover colors to whatever you want. Take advantage of the other options to select font size, background color etc etc.
Much easier than having to do it via css.
