Main Menu placement

I have just purchased the Maxi Menu component Joomla 4 and installed the module. I am able to create and place a  menu on most module position areas of the template but not in the main menu area. Any ideas why.

because your template framework does not allow to use another menu module in that place which is specific to the menu designed by the template
You must ask the template developer about that

you can try with Cassiopeia, and see that it works correctly in the menu position
