Is it possible to have 2 different lots of slides, one displayed on one page and a totally different set of slides on a different page on the same website?

yes you can publish multiple slideshows on the same pages, and on different pages like you want

The module is setup with a bunch of slides and then I specify where on the page to place this module.

So how can I create two different modules, each with its own set of different slides?

in the joomla modules manager >> New (green button) >> Slideshow CK
and set the new module like you want
