how are you setting the active state ? with custom css ? have you tried from the interface ?

I'm setting it from within the module settings on the tabs First Level Link Style etc.

I didn't do anything separate to set it up for active. When I selected it like that it worked. The relevant menu items for the path I was on were showing up in red too. for example of I was on the news>2017 page both news & 2017 were red automatically.

I just restored a backup locally and checked the css file for the 'simple' theme and found this is it:
<?php echo $id; ?> .isactive {
color: #e41921;
Which is what was making it work I guess as I have added that back into the site and now it's working again. I guess your update over wrote this file (which I don't remember ever editing) so how can I make sure future updates won't overwrite it again?

Ok, you can duplicate the theme like exlained here
