Little advice

Looking at this (commercial) template: www.dreamwoodinternational.com/

Which runs twice as slow as one I made with templateck....

What would be the best way to mimic this menu module on the left so it works properly in the responsive setup too?

I will use maximenu + both plugins off course but it seems tricky. I could add another wrapper around the original wrapper and set a module fixed in there. OR set the original wrapper to page width and add an inner wrapper to keep the menu with the body.

With all your experience do you see what the best solution could be?

if you are talking about the sliding menu on mobile (off canvas effect), this is possible with the latest version of the plugin Maximenu Mobile

No I was hinting at the left hanging menu, but choose to use a negative margin and fixed position for the NAV div. (mobile.css)
Have to adjust a few things to get it right and not pushed over the edge on some screens.

Few other remarks:
on template-creator.com -> clicking on the maximenu pic gives an error link
In template creator: Would be nice to be able to double click on a section to jump straight into the CSS
