Am I doing something wrong because I have just been trying out the WordPress version of Template Creator CK and it doesn't seem to create standard WordPress template files like page.php and single.php?

there is no "standard" in Wordpress themes, only possibilities
You can use the page.php and single.php in child theme if you want, but the main template only (really) need the index.php
If you have additionnal infos or comments, I'm opened to any suggestion
