I think we're OK now.

Did a little digging on ajax_com problems, and it looks like the problem was due to an issue with Joomla update. (see joomla.stackexchange.com/questions/16450...5-com-ajax-not-found )

The ajax_com files were there, so I ran Extensions > Manage > Discover and installed the extension, then Extensions > Manage > Manage and checked it was activated, as suggested in the article. But that didn't work...

So I then copied the com_ajax files from a known working installation over, and it now seems to be working OK.
