Maximenu is completely unstyled

I just installed Maximenu, set the module position and menu source. The theme is set to mega9, and all the other settings are at their defaults. The menu appears completely unstyled on my website, as a huge unordered list of links. What did I do wrong?

ok, please try with another template because you don't have any css loaded from any extension in your page

Okay, with the Cassiopeia template, the menu gets styled. So what does that mean? Why isn't the CSS loading with my custom template?

this means that your template has a problem. It is not working correctly and does not load the extensions scripts/styles
may be that it misses the <jodc:include type="head" />
