the parent Ways to Bank is set to Articles » Single Article but the child is an Alias (in the side menu)

Also we just changed the URL cuz there was a typo in it. so it changed to earlgreycu.now-hosting.com/index.php/banking/ways-to-bank

Can you publish a native joomla menu module to show the same menu and tell me, so that I can see if the class is applied

you can see that on the native menu there is also not the active class on the element and the parent.
this is a problem from your menu structure that is not correct, when fixed the menu accordeon will work correctly :)

Mmmm how should I structure it then?

Right now, the main menu structure is this:

(i'm just gonna do the banking as the full thing is big)

level 1 is only visible on the top main menu
level 2 is visible on both side accordeon and top menus
level 3 is only visible on side accordeon menu

I can not answer this, this is a feature from joomla. You can see that you have the same issue with the native joomla menu module. Try to ask on the forum.joomla.org to see if someone can help you with this
