Accordeon Hika only generates links for child item

The configuration detail:
Menu Accordeon CK 2.0.19
Hika patch 1.0.5_j30
Joomla 3.5.1
PHP 5.6.17

I've reviewed forum posts for a possible solution, switched to the BEEZ3 template and tried everything I know and can't get the Accordeon menu to work properly on a HikaShop site.

The issues are:
Clicking on a parent menu only expands the menu - the parent menu items have no link to the associated category that should display the subcategories (and products if applicable) in the content area.

Clicking on a child link displays the products, but the menu then collapses completely.

Please let me know if there's something else I should do / try to have the menu work properly.

ok I see
go in the module options >> element target >> set it on "image only"
this will make the toggler to be on the +/- images

PS : I see that you also have the nextend accordion ?

Some progress, but still not what we'd hoped for.
Changing the above option did cause the parent menu items to display the corresponding categories in the content area, but then the menu collapses when clicking on anything but the root node.
This also causes the "+" and "-" icons to be displayed even though the module is configured under "Styles / Use Images +/-" to "No".

NextEnd is a carryover from a previous site built - we abandoned it early on in favor of yours. Though it works as intended for the most part, we didn't care for the appearance.

We do have an older site using Accordeon CK, but it's Joomla 2.5 and older version of your menu. This one works as we'd expect.
