i was trying it in firebug first to see if it would work, as the jobs.php code is a bit more complex to edit for me, so wanted to just prove it would work based on giving it a class...but it didn't in firebug? any suggestions to help get it working?

no it does not work like this in Firebug because there is some JS to add the needed code to the image

is there anyway to get it to work? like, any JS i can add to the core php page? or replacing the image class its currently using with one of the effects?

you don't understand
in fact, it does not work in Firebug, you must do the modification in the php file and then the JS of the plugin will apply and you should see it working
