Trying to edit existing file - get error "Failed" was created by trogladyte

Built a new template and site, uploaded to server. Went back in to try and edit and can't do anything. Any action, once in the template, is greeted with a cryptic error "Failed". I event tried to load the default template and got the same error.

A good landing is one you can walk away from.
A great landing is one where you can reuse the aircraft!

as you can imagine this type of problem is related to the server.
